Our priority is first and foremost the safety of our Mentors and Apprentices. Though face to face interactions are limited, the main aspects of S2s remain largely unaffected. The critical summer long project is still more than possible, albeit slimmer in what pairs have available to them. Contact, guidance, and bonding between Mentor and Apprentice may actually be better considering the abundance of free time and availability, although the weekly hangout and planning will have to be moved to Zoom or another online video service. We are still extremely optimistic that pairs will find ways to make these sessions creative and fun! Though physical interaction is limited, we consider this new found free time a huge boost to time spent discussing and carrying out plans, helping the Apprentice apply to other opportunities and scholarships, simply talking about goals, future paths, or asking questions, and working on their own exciting tasks. We do understand the loss in not being able to connect in person, however, we really think that even in the face of COVID-19–and perhaps more so–we can still be great Mentors in these Apprentice's corners.
